Nice Lamp, I have 2 of these myself, plus a GE 70w LUR70 (SON-R_ which is the same size as a R95 Reflector Lamp, I also have some Iwasaki NHR***/SDX in 150 and 400 watts which give a warm white light similar to a Incandescent Lamp, and a Iwasaki NHR250/I which is a 250 watt version, I also have a American Philips 70 watt Ceramalux High Pressure Sodium Lamp in a PAR38 Bulb too, Photos can be found in my High Pressure Sodium Lamps Folder see HERE.

I've seen a video of one of these running and the sound the snap starter makes is really nice.

I used to have a Thorn 70W SON-R, nice little lamps, but I used it outside to replace a PAR38 years ago. I tried to protect it from rain but somehow it got broken.

Not really as SON-R lamps are rare these days the only manufacturer is Iwasaki EYE Electric of Japan, OSRAM Discontinued them over 10 years ago and back them they were over £100 plus VAT. even the Iwasaki Lamp OK is about £20 more but you are paying for Quality, also SON-R lamps weren't as popular for General Lighting, compared to the Elliptical and Tubular Lamps which are sold by the 1000000's even to date. hence why they are cheaper. same with the Mercury and /metal ?Halide Reflector Lamps too.

Re the SON R lamp they are not suitable for use in Outdoor lighting unless in a totally enclosed Floodlight, as they are made from Soft Glass, where a PAR38 Lamp is made of Hard Thick Glass, they can be used in simple waterproof lamp holders outside.

Not really interested in the NHR, I have one already, but the SON-R is a highly desirable item.
