An LED traffic light

An LED traffic light

Click to view full size image

A traffic light in which the original reds burned out and have been re lamped with new units. As you can see the yellow and green are still the original 2006 "grid LEDS" these seem to be low quality and seem to last only 3-6 years when I've seen the hidden LEDS seem to last longer than 10 years. So the new lamps should last a while longer.

I remember when they first installed the "grid" LED ones around here. Many of them failed miserably within a short amount of time. I still sometimes see them with some of the LEDs out or flashing.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Recently I noticed new LED traffic lights in Prague - without the usual "sun shields". They probably believe the lights are now strong enough to be still visible in midday sunlight.
Anyway the bare lights look a bit weird tbh.

The reds are either Leotek, GE, or Dialight. They're essentually indistinguishable from the ground except the newest GEs have a noticeable "hot spot" in the center.

The "Grid Type" are GE RX-11s. This was GE's attempt to compete with the incandescent / uniform look that Dialight and Leotek came out with since they didn't have their own high powered emitters. Usually an LED will fail causing a string to flicker or go out. I got four of them, and wound up scrapping one in order to use the LEDs to fix the other three.
