Just to give you an idea on how huge this induction bulb really is!

Seriously if HPS or MH have to go then the option of using these elliptical induction lamps in lowbays is the perfect option!

Why the lamp have cooling fins at the base? Is this a self-ballasted induction lamp?

I"m don't speak english well, and rely on online translating to write in this site.
Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I hope that LED won't replace all forms of other lighting.

On Ebay it said in a blunt manner that its a retrofit induction lamp and the fins are to generate the HF energy for the lamp

Honestly this lamp is new to me

LED streetlights are flipping Yussless!!!! I'd may as well be in the dark!!!!!

With this design, I expects that the induction coil would be inside the lamp like in the case of the Philips QL, and not outside. Induction lamps with external induction coils, are usually tubes like Osram/Sylvania Endura/Icetron.

I agree with dor, its most likely inside the bulb, shine a bright light at it, if you see a shadow on the other side of the bulb of a stalk inside then it has an internal antenna.

The fins are likely cooling for components in the internal ballast.

I don't expect this from being with internal HF generator, as this is a lamp that intended to replace HID lamp and not incandescent lamp. Also, the driver itself don't need the cooling fins, as with CFLs they don't have these, and with classic LED lamps, the cooling fins are for the LEDs only .

I am thinking to get a big plasma ball and try to light it up this way because I don't and cannot get a lowbay fixture due to lack of proper safe storage!

You don't need a lowbay fixture nor a highbay one either. Whatever ballast they use typically is sufficient to test this toy out.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Why you think HPS or MH have to go ? They are great lighting sources, in fact greater in efficacy even than this very Induction lamp

If it has an internal ballast just give it plain 230v AC with live on the centre of the E40 cap

Someone might mistake this for a regular HID lamp if those heatsink fins weren't there. Also, could this lamp be used in streetlights?

Where are bucket lights when you need them?

And what then ? He would still have to read the etch to verify the HID lamp type and power rating before screwing it into a luminaire. I'd hope he stops and thinks twice if he spots there a voltage rating (never present on HIDs except MBFTs) or a non standard wattage

Probably the only situation where it might be a problem is when someone figures out what lamp to get by simply looking at the size and shape.

Back in the times before common use of CFLs, when the 160W HWL was a common lamp choice for use in a large room in the house.....

I agree with Ash that HPS and MH are the greatest lighting sources as well as MV and any HID lamp. I was thinking in more of "sign of the times" if people will want to upgrade just for "progress" sake

How about they upgraded with these inductions for instant light? HIDs are great for most use but they doesn't like frequent switching. And then there's the long warm up periods.

HPS indoors? Unless they're the deluxe kind. No thanks. No one in his right mind would use them indoors for long term use. Nor as a primary light source.

Now if I was a lighting maintenance person of Reading just being able to visit establishments with broken/crap lighting and taking care of the streetlighting I'd install these induction lamps in these large MH fixtures that have been upgraded to LED corn Cobs http://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=3320&pos=121&pid=95438
