I'm quite amused, how people are crying about "planned obsolescence" being something greedy companes have developed in the last few years and how the mid20 century american products were perfect.
Well, then explain the way, how the scale illumination lamp was powered in AA5 radios (first came around 1935) and what were the consequences: Once thesmall illumination lamp blew out (due to mains surges or just due to wear), the rectifier tube filament got overpowered, so rectifier tube failed, so quite expensive repair was needed (those radios, although being the cheapest available, they cost more than a top i-phone today).
Today you find for similar things quite big warning in the manual, because of customer protection laws, but then it was intentionally left out, so customers buy new radios or at least quite expensive (for what they were) replacement tubes for repairs, making the tube makers extremely happy (burned filament was exempt from the tube warranty, burned lamp was not part of the radio warranty either, the fact the tube got killed was caused by the burned lamp, so no warranty for that either)...

No, designing things so cheap they just survive the warranty is nothing new, it was here all the time since people exist. Only today it became a media focus point (which is not bad at all, after the 1000's years)...

Been around a long time but it is becoming more common.

Not really. Just remembering only the good from the past and ignoring the bad. Normal pitfall of a human memory...

The only difference from the past is, the engineers are better at designing on the edge.
It is not they like to do that, in fact neither are the "beancounters" in the companies. It is the consumers who are forcing them to do it.
You should never forget the main function of the companies is not to make products, their main function is to make money for their owners/shareholders. The product making is just the way to make the money. So no one would make anything and loosing on it (well, except Tesla cult but that is an enthusiastic cult, not an industrial company).
So if your competitor just cut corners, he is able to lower the price, customers stop buying from you. So unless you cut the corners as well or convince the customers it is worth for them to pay premium for your product, you are out of business, so wont make money anymore. Guess how you would be sucessful convincing the customers...
