Seems a lot still want switchstart fluoresant fixtures, there is even a recent review made by someone who mentioned they bought the 58W lot for a nail salon!!!!

I ordered a new magnifier lamp at work recently.  To my surprise, these are still preheat/switch start!  It came complete with Chinese 22W cool white circline lamp and aluminum can starter.  It actually works pretty well, it's bright and the ballast (in the base) runs cool.  One of the techs has one with a T5 circline lamp and electronic ballast built into the head.  It looks more modern, is lower profile and a little brighter but mine works fine and I can easily get replacement lamps and starters anywhere.

Its good news. Any idea what exactly they are looking for that makes them choose those ? (it might be some other reason than the reliability/light quality that comes to mind first)

mb146: Its extremely cool that your new circline magnifier lamp was switchstart  8) 8) its going to serve you for a very long time  8)

Ash: Its very good news, there are at least some people (outside LG and the lighting collectors society) who have sense of quality and proper lighting, I've read some shocking reviews including one who mentioned about him tearing the electronic ballasted fixture open to see if the starter was hidden inside but to no avail as he said  :D poor guy had to return the failed fixture

Now since my computer room GLS ceiling rose has gone bust due to plastic degradation, I'm getting the 58W switchstart batten from Wickes as the replacement  :)

You can still buy magnetic PL13 preheat work lights here.

I've managed to find some Crompton Crompacks that are available in switchstart and the second link is basically the same with a cheaper price and the eBay example is overpriced

The European Union, UK government or any other authority hasn't banned magnetic ballasts, and obviously there is still demand, hence they are still sold and hopefully still will be for many years to come.

Ballasts with an EEI (Energy Efficiency Index) rating of 'C' or worse have been phased out by the EU, so all switch-start fixtures sold here should have a B2 'low loss' or B1 'very low loss' ballast fitted.
