Ballast Identification « on: May 29, 2017, 08:02:39 PM » Author: HomeBrewLamps
So i found this on one of my trips to the metal recyclers place, it came from a smashed lighting fixture, there was another ballast or what i think was a ballast, an igniter and a capacitor. all all of them were kind of smashed into the metal enclosure (i think they ran it over with a truck) so i could not recover the rest but i did get this out of it, what is it? why was there two of them? what can i do with this since it was the only thing recoverable, like can I use it with another light? there was a sticker on the enclosure that still read 250W but thats all i could make out.

theres a label on it 216379E2

it's toast.  paperweight or recycle.  Not worth trying to do something with it.  won't be safe.

well i mean it wasn't wet or anything like that, also the multimeter still gives a reading for both sides, its still seeming solid , I dont know if its really ready to give in yet, also if it does happen to break down for some reason i have a proper place to test it so its no biggie if it does go out but I'm having serious doubts it will, but i still dont know what to do with is or why there was two of them. . .

How is the insulation on the coil wires ? that is normally the issue they have, when they are exposed and tossed around and having things impact them. But fear not it's also fixable if it's damaged you can simply re-varnish them and it's available in a spray can or liquid which you just dip the coil in, and just for playing around with it, testing lights you could simply paint it, even nail polish will work, what did the fixture look like, could you see the socket was the wiring plastic or fiberglass covered, was there anything else like a flatted cap / igniter / small circuit board in the mangled mess ?

the varnish appears to be fine,
I just drew what the lamp fixture looked like (this is what i had assumed it looked like before getting smashed to crap) ,
sorry, due to lack of a handheld camera at the moment i used PC web cam, so its kind of backwards, but i think you guys can figure it out:
1 -- Circuit board (capacitor is underneath that)
2 -- the part i recovered looks sorta like a ballast
3 -- lamp socket
4 -- the other ballast like component (the frame was warped around it so i could not recover it)
the shade for the lamp was shattered near by, it was the clear type, this looks like the kindof lamp you'd see in a factory.

That is a HPS ballast. Is there part number on ballast that ballast runs on 120 volts. Lamp 250 watts? It would kill the ignitor trying keep lamp lit.
