I have never been able to figure out why there are three different wattages lamps used in those cars. maybe the longer ones are used when power from diesel(or electric) locomotive is available and shorter ones operates from battery power. the small T5 between those bigger lamps is probably emergency light.

VR(the Finnish railways) still uses lots of T12 lamps with starter strip still nowadays. maybe the ballast used in the cars are not compatible with T8's

I don't know, what primary energy source does the lighting system use (to charge the batteries,...), if the generators driven by the car movement or a cable from the locomotive. If it is only the car movement, there have to be quite complex battery charge management system in order to prioritize the loads based on the charge state (allow the use of the battery power by all fancy things like high output lights and power outlets, while still ensuring there is always enough juice left for the safety equipment, like tail lights or so...).
And this need the lighting to have multiple dimming levels (full output when the primary power source is available, reduced output when it disappear for longer time and minimum output when the battery charge state becomes too low). And for that the most efficient way is to use three separate lamps with apropriate output levels and power needs.
And the manual light switches there allow the manual changeover to the lower setting.

And indeed, the T12 are still used, because the T8 are compatible with T12 only on the preheat ballasts, nowhere else.

No more selfballasted c***

Some if not all starting strip lamps have high resistance resistor built inside their end caps to help ignition by conducting charge to lamp surface. There is also lamps intended for DC operation. Older VR cars used special system for lighting using DC or central lighting inverter.

Too many things are secret. Only open information can really preserve old technology.

I like fluorescent and other conventional lighting and old electronic equipment. Today's things are not made to last.

Old thread I know, but I guess that's 2x40W, 1x20W T12 and 1x13W T5?

Those T12s with the starter strip may be single-pin at each end, I've seen those used here.

I believe they were used in petrol pumps etc. where any potential for arcing in a volatile atmosphere wasn't desirable.

Say NO to DICTATORSHIP in the form of bulb/tube/ballast bans !!
