HPS-converted Unistyle 175 in Fircrest, Washington. Sadly there were hardly any of these left even in 2011 when this photo was taken.

I remember when this retrofit happened. I think they just installed HPS retro lamps (Sylvania Unalux for example). They would start out red, before turning yellow.

There's no known cure for Westinghouse Lifeguard disease, so the only way to treat it is to find more!!! LOL LOL LOL

Wow amazing they kept relamping all those MVs with retrofit lamps. I feel like if they would have changed out the fixtures or actually reballasted them to HPS, that would be much cheaper in the long run. Glad they kept some of these oldies up though! Wish there were some more around here. Though any old lights still left around here are all original inside. If a fixture didn't work with a new lamp and PC around here, it got replaced entirely.

When this project happened in '83, they only put the HPS retrofit lamps in the 175W luminaires. The 400W Unistyles were replaced with 200W/S66 ITT/American-Electric Series 25 FCO's. All other regional utilities/cities at the time replaced their cobra-heads instead.
The end result was a brighter street than what a 100W/S54 lamp could've ever produced (which is what typically replaced a 175W/H39).

I had wondered if they had retrofit lamps in them...I don't really remember the startup, but don't remember seeing any that turned red that would be an obvious giveway. Though some retrofit lamps (EYE for example) don't have the Penning mixture so it's hard to tell.

I wish I could've seen these when they were still mercury...I likely did, but can't remember that far back.

I'm lampin...

Growing up near Tacoma and environs, I remember well the whole region being lit with mercury vapor. It was quite a change when everything went HPS in 1983. Even Portland did it at the same time. The last holdout was Seattle city light (1987 +/-), and PSE (1991 +/-).

Yeah I never understood retrofitting a 175w MV with 150w. 150w is a 250w mv replacement. Same for 360w hps replacing 400w mv. But I suppose they are limited with how much they can drop the wattage without modifying the ballast.

I recall hearing that Norelco sold 150w HPS yard lights that were actually 175w mv with a retrofit lamp. I bet that was confusing for the maintenance people lol.

I've never seen a retrofit HPS lamp in person before.

Yeah unless the area was underlit to begin with it'd make more sense to retrofit it with a 100w HPS lamp and ballast instead.

They were also never really suited for a lot of cobraheads since the retrofit lamps only ran on HX or reactor type ballasts so a lot of CW ballast equipped cobraheads won't be able to run them, espeically the higher wattage lights which were more likely to have a CW ballast.

I've never seen one in person too, it would be nice to get a 150w one for my yardlights though.

Yeah, Norelco made a bunch of odd residential HID yardlights, there was another one with was basically a incandescent yardlight with a 250w mogul based SBMV lamp.
