Westinghouse Silverliner refractor

Westinghouse Silverliner refractor

This photo is to show the detail of the glass refractor on (my) Westinghouse OV-25. There is a belief that dropped lens streetlight refractors contribute to a lot of glare, versus a full-cutoff type does not. The lens design refracts the light from a clear (point source) lamp down, sideways and slightly forward as it should. There is obviously some light emitted from the front and back of the refractor but one can stare at this 400w mercury lamp lit does not seem bright viewed directly from the front, back or straight below. On a horizontal plane, the light emitted is quite minimal. I think these lenses were engineered very well and the "glare" seems hardly more than a full-cutoff streetlight (yes, there is "glare" from those too at certain angles), but the light distribution of the semi-cutoff type is far wider on the street. Using full-cutoff streetlights means the pole spacing must be closer together - therefore more lights need to be used.
