Lucalox that is. And I live on the first floor. This is a non cycling lamp and it has, quite prominently, a starting antenna. For some reason it is quite difficult to ignite even then, and one of my ballasts won't start it, thus the massive sputtering on the top electrode. On the other ballast it flickers and flashes purple but it runs up like a normal lamp. Hoping to burn it out so it burns Mercury color...though perhaps it just goes "out"?

That's unfortunate, but not surprising. These lamps can't compete with the old tried and true HPS lamps of yesteryear.

If this lamp have 300 torr xenon, you need 5KV ignitor to start it. I think that the American HPS ignitors usually have lower pulse rate than this. Try igniting the lamp with a PSMH ignitor which have higher pulse rate than the HPS ignitor.
Or the lamp is EOL, because of the blackening on one end? (The amount of sodium-mercury amalgam in non-cycling HPS lamps, is very low, so it is barely visible)
