Cool it's an old CWA mercury ballast. I have one similar to this but made for 175w MH or MV lamps and is physically bigger than this one.

MH have to be bigger, as they need to have higher OCV, what mean higher VA's the secondary has to handle (~440VA for MV, ~600VA for MH). And to keep losses similar, the wire has to be way thicker, as it mean lower losses relative to VA's to handle...

This ballast seems to strike up my sylvania metal-arc instantly every time. And it functions fine, so i don't see the need to use a MH ballast.

The problem with MH striking might arise at cold temperatures and/or when the lamp wear off. Other issue might be, then MH require tighter current tolerances then MV, so MH ballasts have to be more accurately made.
But if the lamp ignite and the current is within the lamp spec, there is no other issue running MH on MV ballast...
