3rd time lucky. I ordered one from an electrical distributors and it turned out someone had dropped it on the end and it had lost vacuum and damaged a pin, I swapped it for another and this one had no visible signs of damage but was also broken. They don't get much demand for these tubes now so they only ordered 2 in and I had to wait for another 2 to arrive, this time the 3rd one I've taken home is fine!

It's a 100W krypton energy saver retrofit tube designed to replace 125W tubes. The 100W tube was the first energy saving tube designed by Thorn. All the other energy saving tubes are 1" in diameter, this is needed because the krypton gas filling reduces the tube voltage which also reduces light output and a narrower diameter tube was found to correct this. At such a great length, 1" diameter tubes were considered too fragile so this tube remains a 1 1/2" T12 tube with slightly reduced light output compared to the original 125W version.

You have a soon to be very rare tube there. All T12 tubes will be banned (from manufacture or sale) in the EU by 2012.

Getting a T12 tube will be even harder, and they definitely won't be made in Germany!

Yup, The ban is drawing closer but I still haven't made much of an effort to stock up on T12s. Storage is a problem where I live.

I'm also worried about the mercury vapour ban but I have enough room to store plenty of those!
