General Electric Powerglow A-1000 and Wide-Lite flood

General Electric Powerglow A-1000 and Wide-Lite flood

These lights are in a currently unused parking lot but have occasionally been switched on. The Powerglow fixture uses a 1000w mercury lamp and so does the floodlight, which is wired to a separate circuit.

How big is this one? At first glance it looks like a normal posttop lantern but i think it is much bigger than that.

It is MUCH bigger - according to the specifications, it's 4 feet in diameter (!) and 3 feet high. The larger size with FOUR 1000w lamps is over 6 feet in diameter!

I have seen the larger size in a childrens book about the lightbulb. There were a few used to light a large playground and the pic showed the man installing the bulbs into it. The top cover was removed and the four 1000w mercury lamps were mounted in a horizontal position, equally spaced out forming a square arrangement. To be honest I am surprised and glad to see it again as it was one of my early 'sightings' of lamps and lighting.

imj, do you know the name of that children's book? I would love to see that book! I'm almost positive that's how the lamps were arranged on the A-4000 Powerglow fixture, as I remember seeing one many years ago without a refractor, but I've been told they are also installed mounted base-up in some of the fixtures. In the 1000w fixture in the above picture, though, the lamp is mounted right in the center within a frame (like a table lamp), base down.

That book was called THE LIGHT BULB and has a brownish yellow soft cover with the pic of the very first incandescent light bulb. It was a library book so I don't have it with me but I am very sure that was the arrangement and lantern.
