It seems amazing that such designs of lantern are still in production in a country as developed as Australia. The design, which is of British origin, although modified, dates back to 1957, with the launch of the Atlas (later Thorn) Alpha 3. GEC followed suit and launched a similar range of lanterns. This design of lantern was quite popular in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s, with popularity decreasing in the 1980s before production finally ceased in the early 1990s.

GEC/Osram don't really supply these anymore, they still do install their "Optispan" range with a top access cover but in smaller numbers compared to Sylvania. Last latest place I've seen these installed (but with a slightly different lens) was on the then new Citylink tollway just where the Tullamarine freeway starts in Melbourne.

Could never explain why I risk so much to collect them!

These are in such good condition - they look so big when they are on the ground. There's no way I can see its replacement lasting even half the life that these do.

I love these... very nice

Bring back Fluorescent and SOX Streetlights. Keep magnetic ballasts.
