The electric field at the sharp points on the electrodes is strong enough to direct a "current" of sputtered metal to make black splotches on the bulb after a few tens of hours operation. Cathode glow lamps need to have rounded-off electrodes to minimize this effect.

Manufactured articles should be made to be used, not made to be sold!
