Philips U bent now made in China BUT still Westinghouse tooling!

Philips U bent now made in China BUT still Westinghouse tooling!

Click to view full size image

Philips closed the factory in Mexico last year. The A19 and PAR halogens went to Poland, India etc. The U bent lamps were the last fluorescent lamps made there. Also, the U bent line is among the few Philips products still made on the old Westinghouse machinery. To my surprise, it appears Philips packed up the machinery and shipped to China rather than outsource. Still, I want USA made stuff!

How can you tell it's Westinghouse tooling?

Also, it's odd seeing a U-bent made in China. All the ones I've ever seen were made in the USA, Canada, or Mexico.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

I compared a Mexican made Philips T12 U bent to a Westy U bent from 1983 or so, and the bend structure is exactly the same. Also Philips retained the Westinghouse designed bar between the end caps, still present in this new Chinese lamp.

May all the great lighting technologies have their place in history.

I don't know what kind of sockets is used with these lamps?
You must turn the sockets instead of the lamp when you attach it to the fixture...

No, they use sockets where you just push and snap the pins in.

Still wanting USA made stuff huh? Then plan on relamping Philips MV lamps more often than Sylvania MV lamps.

Did they change anything on the machinery other than the location they're used at?

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

I'll examine these more closely later. I know the date code is printed in inkjet, in the same way and spot as the Mexico ones.

The Philips T8 U-bends were really bad, and I would have to assume that Philips doesn't care to improve them, so these new ones probably aren't any better.

@FGS: Philips and Sylvania mercury vapor lamps are both made in China.

Pride and quality workmanship should lie behind manufacturing, not greed.

How can you tell it was made on Westy tooling?

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Dave! Save as much lamps as you can from American and European factories. Here the same, Ledvance is closing down the German fluorescent factory - T8 tubes are now from Russia and China! It does not take long until the Italian Bari factory is closing too. Then we wil have all the T5 from China...
