Granted, these are off brands rather than Cree or Philips. But this won't bode well with the store owner who likely was talked into by the electric utility to buy these, at a subsidized price but likely still more $$$ than fluorescent.

Ugh, the glare! The shelves look rather dim as well, suggesting that the light is shining straight down to the floor.

Pride and quality workmanship should lie behind manufacturing, not greed.

Placement helps. The looks like they're over the shelves instead of centered between the rows.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Ugh what the hell?! I've heard stored of these 8ft ones falling out out since they sag in the middle. This is just awful. It's not the LEDs themselves, it's the stupid redneck looking LED tubes. STOP TRYING TO MIMIC FLUORESCENTS!!! YOU CAN'T ACCOMPLISH IT!!!

Ahem Mike. Autozone's and Ace's led tubes accomplished it.

Our local Murray's auto parts store retrofitted 4xF96T12 into led tubes and the first thing I noticed is how badly they all sagged! I haven't been in there in awhile to see how they are holding up...literally, lol.

We have Saggy Tubes, and the bureaucrats that subsidized this junk, have Saggy Diapers--it all works, and by the way Philips and CREE junk are as bad, and NO they DO NOT mimic fluorescents, and make HALF the light to boot, so quit defending a dead end technology that will be LONG passe' on 5-10 years. They are JUNK, period the end, and are NOT as efficient as fluorescent. Rick D.

I agree with you, Rick. The led retrofits for linear fluorescent tubes might as well be banned along with t12 lamps.
I believe that they might as well just install led specific fixtures, since they'll have better heat dissipation and light distribution, those plastic tubes overheat a lot and then crap out as a result.

Holy [CENSORED], they are now banning t12 lamps!?!?!? These "green regulations" are getting out of hand. Soon they will be banning cars, because they polute. Then what? Oh, lets ban breathing since it adds CO2 to the atmosphere! I hope not... I know a few places that still use t12 exclusively, they are gonna be in trouble if this happens...

There will never be an across-the-board ban. There are triphosphor T12s that are more efficient than T8s. They will just keep passing regulations that limit the variety of T12s until they're no longer favorable. Honestly at this point, any remaining T12 installations and MV installations should just be left alone since in another 10 years Invasion of the LEDs is going to happen across the continent and around the globe. No sense in replacing T12s with T8s or MV with HPS if LEDs are going to be the only option in another decade or two. Who knows how far these lighting regulations are going to go.

Yep, sadly that's pretty much the way I see things going as well streetlight98..

Who knows though, someone may come out with something thats actually better/truly more efficient than LEDs

Colored Fluorescent's such as F40T12 Red or  Green or Blue are awesome...

What if LEDs reach near 100% conversion efficiency as the proponents of LED lighting claim to predict?

May all the great lighting technologies have their place in history.

@Zarlog: They've been banning T12s since the 90s. It started with full power F40 and F96 /WW, /CW, and /D lamps. Then in 2012, all F40 and F96 (including energy saver) T12s were banned except for those that have a CRI of at least 87 or meet certain efficiency requirements (which very few lamps actually meet). Last year, 700 series F32T8s were also banned.

Fortunately, I haven't heard of any more bans. Hopefully they'll calm down now that LEDs are really taking off. It was rumored that MV lamps would be banned in 2016, but a major manufacturer wasn't aware of a ban as recently as a few weeks ago.

Does anyone actually know who this "major manufacturer" is? I'd be interested to know which of the big three it was... GE is discontinuing most of it's non-LED products effective January 1, 2016 so they probably don't care if there's a MV ban anyway.

That's not a loss when it comes to GE mercs, the newer ones are reported to suck, along with their HPS and mh.

@ Keif: Their HPS lamps are good and new MH lamps are good too from what I hear. Not sure if they fixed their mercs. They had cycling issues much like some of the Chinese MVs.

@ Nick: Yep, after Jan 1, 2016, GE will no longer make any MH street lights, only HPS. Here's the PDF article.

Not sure if that affects only fixtures or lamps too. They make the best fluorescent lamps so it would be a great loss if they stopped making fluorescent lamps. I honestly thought Philips would have done something like this before anyone else, since Philips seems to be lobbying these lighting regulations big time, though I'm sure GE is just as big of a lobbyist as Philips.

Did they ever make metal halide NEMA buckets (excluding the crappy yardblasters)?

"They" being GE or in general? GE never made yardblasters so I'll assume the latter. AEL and Cooper do make PSMH NEMA heads, yes. GE only ever made HPS 201SAs though (aside from MV) but GE made PSMH and MH Powr/Brackets as did Cooper and AEL.

I'm talking of in general, Mike. Obviously, they'd need a closed bucket or open rated lamp (even though explosions are rare.)

AEL (and I think Cooper) offered a "vented bottom" acrylic bucket with a screen on the bottom to catch a lamp explosion.
