Got at restore for a couple bucks. Came with a now removed thomas 1xF40T12 ballast.

Notice the starter socket on the side. I could install my robertson preheat ballast and a starter i pulled from the half pipers and make this preheat.

So this came with a HPS ballast?

To resist is to piss in the wind, anyone who does will end up smelling.

Ah I see. Yeah my phone does that too. Why did you remove the ballast? Junking the fixture?

No I prefer to remove the ballasts from fixtures when I store them, reduces the weight and makes moving them around much easier. I keep the ballasts stored separately. This fixture may see a preheat ballast in the future since it has the starter knockout pattern
