Im presuming the bottom red one is live that connects to mains and the one in a white sleeve above is the neutral mains.

Then im guessing that the red and black cables coming out of the ignitor connect to either side of the SOX lampholder.

Can anyone verify if this is correct?

That box mentions Live input, live output and 'cell 1' and 'cell 2'

So im thinking it was used to link up a photocell?

The Black Box thing at the Bottom of the photo is a Base unit for a 2 Part Photocell Control Box/Relay see HERE, what you can do is remove the Red and Black Wires from this and connect the Red to the Live and the Black to the Neutral, you cansee both a Red and Black Wire connecting to the Ignitor the Black Box with Silver Label, you connect your Lamp across this, and it should work. if the Lamp fails to strike, you can remove the Lamp from the Lampholder then switch on the Circuit, if OK you will hear a High Pitch Squeal from the Ignitor, if NO, you need to check the Ballast with a Volt meter to see if the ballast is OK, if yes you need an new Ignitor.

I switched on my Philips MI50 without a lamp fitted once to see if the ignitor was working properly as it was struggling to start the lamp (turned out to be a dry solder joint in the ignitor), and it buzzed, then went bang and blew the fuse in the plug! It still worked when I replaced the fuse though.
