I have not tested this one because I am scared to mess with it the wires are brittle and falling apart and I really don't want cancer either so I'm just not going mess with it. It's an Old Jefferson ballast it's leaking tar as well. I am going to convert it to rapidstart because I don't have a preheat ballast. I was wanting to keep the old ballast but its a fire hazard.

If You want to keep it original I would just recommend cutting the wires and
Keeping the old ballast in the light and installing the new ballasts that You plan on upgrading to !!

This way You have an all original fixture but with You’re new ballasts installed- That’s what I’ve done ,

From what I’ve Ben told - Jefferson ballasts are built well,

Nice light !!!

Slip a little heatshrink over the brittle wires and it will be fine. You won't get cancer by messing with one ballast. It takes years of constant exposure for those chemicals to cause cancer.

A nice way to add some protection to these old ballast is to put an fuse inline with the power coming into the fixture.
