Just like the Advance ballast in my 400w (Probe Start) MH highbay.

Old lighting is, and will always be, the best lighting.

Crackles and smells? Sounds like you got yourself an electric campfire.

Except i don't think a campfire should smell like burnt lacquer. :/

Old lighting is, and will always be, the best lighting.

That's burning varnish. Sounds like you have two layers of windings (or more I suppose) shorting together. Not a dead short but if left to run it will get hot and the short will grow until it either melts open or draws enough current to trip the breaker. I like OEM ballasts without the paper wrapped coils. Makes inspecting the coils easier.

Please check out my newly-updated website! McCann Lighting Company is where my street light collection is displayed in detail.
