See what happened to the electric kettle of the storage of Carmel hospital! :O

At 9:00, one of the workers of the storage of Carmel hospital, boiled water in the kettle. Suddenly, after few sec, the switch ignited a huge flame which burned the entire arm of the kettle. The worker and I noticed this immediately and the worker disconnected it in a hurry up and used the fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.

At my workplace there was another kettle a while back (other manufacturer name, but also switch in the same location as here) that quietly stopped working. I disassembled it and found that one of the switch contacts melted through the plastic switch body to the point where it does not close contact when the switch is in the ON position

In this case, the contact started arcing when the kettle was on, so the arc just kept burning, ballasted by the heating element at some 6..8ish A

Also, why the extinguisher ? Wasn't there a sink with water right there ?

We scared and searched for the fastest way to extinguish the fire, which was the extinguisher.

Many years ago in Finland there was a cheap brand kettle Palazzo NS60 in recall for this reason.
