Is this from before you replaced the LEDs? They still look very dim in the picture. I personally think LED EXIT signs are too dim anyway. A cool project though!

Yes, this is with the new LEDs. The pictures make it look otherwise but it's a significant improvement from before. It's still not nearly as bright as an incandescent or fluorescent exit sign though.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

the LED exit signs do dim out. the older ones also weren't as bright from the start as the newer ones are,sometimes i can't tell if they are lit and when i open them up they work..the fluorescents overhead are just too bright but in the event of a power failure as long as the battery is good they should be visible even if dimmed out a bit

I think the fluorescents are just right. They're not too bright. In a smoke-filled room you want the exit signs to be bright or else you won't see them.
