Sure-Lites exit/emergency light

Sure-Lites exit/emergency light

Got this from school today. It was replaced because the LEDs in the EXIT sign have dimmed out. There are a few more of these in a similar state, so I may have more of them soon. I'm thinking about buying a bunch of red LEDs on eBay and soldering them onto the board to make this useful again. The emergency lights are 6-volt incandescent and still work great. This was replaced by a Lithonia model that is totally LED.

Cool! I actually went ahead and ordered some new LEDs from China. $3.49 for 100 shipped to my door! Sorry RadioShack. If this is successful, I'll probably just fix the other signs the same way instead of making the school buy new ones. These things aren't cheap.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Cool! What you can do is use this one to replace the next one, fix it up, and use that to replace the third one, fix that, use it to replace the fourth, etc so that way there are no missing signs. There are so many dim exit signs at my school. Actually, I don't think there are any that are decently bright. There are quite a few vintage ones retrofitted to LED though. Although they are useless in terms of effectivness (LEDs are way too dim and they're red when the vintage signs were designed for incandescents, which are white), they certainly look nice compared to today's plastic junk.

Please check out my newly-updated website! McCann Lighting Company is where my street light collection is displayed in detail.

That's a good idea. I was originally going to unplug the boards from the problematic signs and take them all home and fix them, but I think I'll do one at a time like you suggested. That way there won't be any signs totally out while I'm fixing them. I will just pull out the boards, though, so I don't have to go around replacing entire signs.
