Were these recessed fixtures an HID afterthought or were the ballasts originally housed in those junction boxes, which I take are 10x10x4 ?

Anyways, nice score !

Coming out from an office suite, these were probably made by the electrical contractor. But yes, I agree, they were an afterthought because all ballasts were loose/unmounted in the boxes including the capacitors! Very nice standard 8"x8"x6" Junction boxes too.

Those must have been very noisy. I tried with a 50W MH ballast (magnetic) just loose in a 6x6x4 box and it was very, very loud. I would have given it sound rated class Z. I can't imagine six times M57 loose in boxes above the ceiling, in an office at that.

You could use those junction boxes as portable remote ballast enclosures. With M57, no worry about loss of pulse power.

Yeah I thought about how these were installed, may have been just six 175 watters for a high-ceiling lobby. Btw, these had pear-shaped mogul GE clear lamps. Came back many times and found nothing else in the container.
