These are such amazing lamps! It's a shame they never caught on and are now rare collectors' items today. Someday I'd like to find one too

Yes, it's like three-way incandescents here, they were around for a few years in the late 60's/early 70's, then they disappeared never to be seen again

Were these MH?

Yes, these are self ballasted metal halide lamps. First the incandescent filament is illuminated and then when the MH capsule is fully warmed up, the incandescent filament is automatically switched off to emit high quality and bright MH light

Finally got to see one lit. I got the one in the package earlier but members here urged me to leave it original and sealed so I did and waited until I could get a used one. I was also nervous about firing up electronics that obviously had never been used since being made 40 year ago.

US ebay. Seller knows what he has and wants top dollar for them, they've been sitting a year and he's slowly reducing prices.

Yes, these are self ballasted metal halide lamps. First the incandescent filament is illuminated and then when the MH capsule is fully warmed up, the incandescent filament is automatically switched off to emit high quality and bright MH light

The filament always light, even at full output. The light of the DC MH arctube is much more intense than the filament, that the filament becomes invisible. And the filament lights even when the lamp cooling down for hot restrike.

Would like to find one for the novelty but so far I have the much more common self ballasted MH PAR 38 lamps instead.
