Failed LED and Other Lamps

Failed LED and Other Lamps

These bulbs were all installed in small globe lights affixed to some of the buildings at the condominium. Seven of the twelve on the circuit were out and either nobody had notified maintenance or they were taking their time, so I replaced them myself. The three newest were Sylvania LED, and can't be much more than a year old. There were also two CFLs (one "Energetic", and one without visible text), a 3-Way 150W bulb of all things, and a 100W incandescent. I suspect the latter two were put in by residents and not management, but who knows.

The LEDs all make a ticking sound when energized, which slows down then stops when unplugged. The smaller CFL behaves similarly, but the sound is more of a whine which winds down when powered off. None produce any light, but the CFLs do have vacuum.

They were installed base up in enclosed fixtures, and these look like the low end Sylvania model, but I was still surprised how quickly they failed. I replaced them with spare 9 and 13W CFLs I had on hand.

Got the same issue at my complex. All the outdoor lights got replaced by the HOA with a teardrop pendant style. Cheap Satco LED bulbs were installed by the contractor. They're POS. Two on my 4 unit building failed, and I replaced them with LED filament soft whites. A third just failed on the next building, I may put in an incandescent...

I'm guessing base up operation which puts the ballast at the most heat load. I've got some 8 year old wally world specials that are still choochin 365/12hrs probably from operating base down in a open floor lamp.

CFL bases get yellowed due to the small amount of UV by the tube as well as heat.

Update: the fourth and final LED lamp has failed. I'm not too surprised considering they were probably all from the same batch, but I thought the cold weather might have helped it hang on a bit longer.
