Sylvania Dura-One

Here is a Sylvania 23W Dura-One reflector lamp. It's an induction (electrodeless) CFL intended to replace 65W floodlight. It starts out dim, but warmup is quicker than a typical spiral CFL flood. There was also an A-shaped lamp, but I was not able to locate one. The box and lamp both had stickers that stated it was "Made in China." I peeled the sticker off the lamp, and there was text printed underneath. It stated "Made in Canada."

Interesting about the country of manufacture. I bought some "GE" FS-4 starters that had "Made in Costa Rica" covered over with what appeared to be a black marker, and "Made in China" stamped in black ink above it.

Nice induction lamp! I have an A-shaped one like Dave laying around somewhere. I didn't know a flood light shaped one existed. These run hotter than a CFL though, actually not that much cooler than an incandescent. Mine was actually made in Canada. I'm guessing they probably changed locations and used stickers to cover up the country of origin until they update the packaging.

My HN starters from Home Depot (with GE packaging) also had MADE IN COSTA RICA added an an afterthought, in place of MADE IN CHINA.

I hope yours lasts. I ordered two; they both failed within a day. Sylvania replaced them, but one of the replacements also failed after I gave them both away to friends.

I'm lampin...

Ah I'm not putting mine into use. It's just in the collection. Very unique lamp but with CFLs all over the market and now LEDs, these cool induction lamps don't really serve that great of a purpose. I think they'd do fine in the cold, but other than that they share the same limitations as CFLs (can't run the A-shaped versions in an enclosed fixture since you'll cook the electronics, and since these lamps give off way more heat than CFLs, I assume the electronics would fry fairly easily.) Does Sylvania still make these? I didn't think they did but reading that they replaced your duds, I guess they still do make them?
