Circline Adapter Repired

Circline Adapter Repired

The starter got stuck closed in this adapter, and I decided to try to repair it. I found a spare FS-22 starter, which oddly enough had been factory-installed in an F8T5 fixture where I'd expect to see an FS-5. Luckily the glowbottle is exactly the same size. I suspect a stubbier one would not fit. So after a little soldering, it's up and running again. I kept the original condenser, which turned out to be OK.

The original condenser was not okay? Shorted?

Whoops, I meant to say that the cap was fine (not shorted). Corrected.

My t5 fixtures always got fs-2 starters. Because the ballasts are just a series choke, the ocv is line voltage, and the operating lamp voltage is always low enough to not false trigger the starter. I never saw a point in fs-5 starters. For bigger lamps, the ballast will be a transformer with higher ocv, so they get fs-4. I don't ever remember installing anything else like a fs-22 or fs-25 etc.

I don't know the point of having both FS-5 and FS-2 starters, either. They are meant for pretty much the same arc voltage. Maybe the FS-2 is just designed to handle the extra current?

Just for future reference, you can also use a FS-25 starter.

Preheat and T-12 fluorescents forever! Down with LED's and instant start T-8 fluorescents.
