These fittings are gilt bronze and date back to the XIX century. They have been electrified around 1900 and the wires in the walls are still the original ones. The lampholders werde converted to E10 in the 1980s but changed back to E14 for economical reasons. It makes a difference if a lightbulb costs you around EUR 0,40 or EUR 10,00 especially when dozens of dozens are in constant use.

It would be a nightmare to rewire this without damaging any of the walls or cornices.
