For some reason, this Costco decided the best way to retrofit their troffers from 2 lamp T8 to LED was to install a CREE CPY LEDs inside the fixtures.

This might be one of the dumbest retrofits i've ever seen.

That's why they are called "Cost Company"!

They charge the least, they PAY the least and they get what they pay for!

Would not be allowed here, the electrical inspectors would "have kittens". All old non compliant wiring and fixtures has to be ripped out when a new install is done...It has to ALL be bought up to date. PARTICULARLY in commercial jobs where the public have access...

Manufactured articles should be made to be used, not made to be sold!

These fixtures are not ideal for the job as they leave a bright spot on the floor below them and leave everything around them dimly lit.

Old lighting is, and will always be, the best lighting.

Just when I think people cant be stupider with lighting. Right now my costco has metal halide high bay lights and T8 in its troffers. If they pull this stunt here I may stop renewing my membership with them

Idiots, idiots, IDIOTS. Yet another step forward toward the movie Idiocracy. How stupid can a person be to come up
with THIS IDEA?? Wow. This one is really high up there in terms of the dumbest moves I've ever seen regarding lighting, on Lighting Gallery.
This... just might be the dumbest idea/retrofit I've ever seen thus far. Obviously... this section of the store is ten times
dimmer than what it was with the T8's, not only that, but the store now looks ghetto. Even non lighting enthusiasts could be able to
detect this. Okay, I'm willing to bet, maybe this stupidity is temporary. Too stupid to be long term... right? Sigh.

A bad way to retrofit!

T8 LEDs tubes would be the best for this. But a LED canopy fixture? Soooo dumb AF.

This is the sort of thing you see when a First World country starts to degenerate to Second or Third World....Governments start to do away with inspectors as a part of the "whole grinding down process" and this is the sort of thing that results.

Go to a really poor country like India or Bangladesh and this would look space-age...truely!

One thing I tend to "feel" about the U.S. (and to some extent here in Australia too) is that certain responsibilities are left to the (Tin pot) State Governments who are far more likely to shirk their responsibilities to the citizens than the Federal Government would be.

Really, electrical regulations should be a Federal Government responsibility and uniform right across the whole country. The U.S. is notorious for its wildy differening stae laws...as if the people are any different regardless of where they are?!

Generally the Federal Government has "the biggest stick" ...and in these days of such social dishonesty, it should be used more!

Manufactured articles should be made to be used, not made to be sold!

REALLY !!! calling the person who did this stupid is an insult to stupid people, this is shear LAZINESS ! if they really wanted to install these, REMOVE THE OLD FIXTURE, REPLACE THE CEILING TILE AND INSTALL IT ON THE CEILING ! Then again, I complain to much, last summer my wraparound in my kitchen had a major ballast failure, ( lots of smoke, black goo everywhere and burnt wiring ) I didn't want to replace it since kitchen is getting remodeled soon . SoI raided my stash of fixture parts and installed 3 incan sockets w/angle mounting some wire and 3-23 w daylight cfl's, I know... it's hillbilly as hell but it works reliably now and is brighter than the 2 4 foot t-12's were Besides, it's only temporary!!

Maybe that's the score here....just a temporary botch because the shop will be re-fitted soon!

Here, if the shop is part of a bigger shopping centre, the centre management force tenant businesses to re-model every three years...to keep the place "looking fresh"!

As wide-lite 1000 stated if it's temporary than ok fine. However this appears to not be so that's where problems occur. I have done things like put t8s in a T12 fixture but that's because I didn't have T12 lamps and immediately needed light in the area but again as I said it was only for a few days as the t12 lamps came in and were then promptly replaced.

I could see this in some mom-and-pop place, but Costco?! I don't understand how "corporate" is OK with this sort of thing. If it's actually permanent, the installer should be fired.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Good point...unless they can't get the original lamp types cheap enough, but still, its a sloppy job.

Would LOVE to know how much they, (the sloppy-joes who did this) were paid per luminaire....now that would be telling and reveal a lot about the socioeconomic states at that time and place.

We have this saying here..."If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!"

How many luminaires are in this place??

takemorepills, that's a good point. T8s are cheap and T8 LEDs aren't bad either these days. If they wanted an LED retrofit, they should've used LED tubes, troffer retrofit kits, or just installed new LED troffers/panels.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

Wow, and I thought the cheesy retrofits around here were bad, this is inception-style stupid, its stupid within stupid. Multiple layers deep of stupid. This reminds me of LED retrofitting I saw a few years back in Mexico, as Globe Collector stated above, similar work seen in developing nations. I truly believe we (the US) is an empire rotting from within, we have over 900 military bases around the world that cost 100 billion dollars a year to maintain, yet our country itself is regressing in so many ways. Our infrastructure gets a grade of D from the Society of civil Engineers.

I think the CREE CPY fixtures (the same type as used here) cost more than installing proper 2x4 LED troffers.

Kyle (Blue Halide)....Spraking of Civil Engineering,...

Do they ever make public how many bridges collapse in the Unites States each year...I remember that one in Minneapolis going down about a decade ago....during rush hour wasn't it?

Ours in Hobart has collapsed too...least part of it, but only when a ship hit it!

The Elephant is the corner in the United States is the Elites hoarding all the resources for themselves and leaving virtually none for anyone else, i.e. a few % of the population holding nearly 90% of the rescources...I heard CRAZY stories of people in Detriot living in tents while their houses were right there with sheets of plywood tacked over the windows....take more than a piece of plywood to keep me out on a cold winter's night!

@Nickfans, yeah I was thinking the exact same thing!! Costco... a very well known name, doing something as ghetto as this?
Please tell me this isn't going to become a trend that all Costco stores get into. I don't/won't shop at Costco, but inadequate lighting
like this certainly isn't convincing me to change my mind.

And Takemorepills mentioned something I didn't even realize... these people didn't even install these center to the fixture.
The idiots didn't even try. My brain hurts. Each time I look at this picture, I feel az if my inteligence iz begining 2 drifft awaayyyyy.

One thing i noticed is while most Costco's (in my area) will cover things just enough where people generally won't see what's going on unless they peak past the edge of the tarps, this one make sure to cover every corner so that no one can take a peek at whatever is going on.

@High Intensity, what do you mean? If you're talking about the fixtures in this pic, well, they didn't cover anything.
Who ever created this installation in this pic did so bad, they didn't even finish cutting/taking off the wires
from the previous lamp holders. If you look closely, you can see wires dangling from the sides of the previous upper fixture

@High Intensity, Ohh lol I misread your message. I'm guessing they've had problems with people peaking through the tarps
during construction in the past... either that or maybe they do it to prevent dust and debris from entering the next room or something
