Damaged Jefferson Electric 2-Lamp F40T12 Ballasts

Damaged Jefferson Electric 2-Lamp F40T12 Ballasts

Click to view full size image

Pulled from two damaged 4-lamp troffers, i suspect the capacitors in all three ballasts are shot (making them glorified NPF ballasts), possibly from someone using 34w lamps on these things. Despite that, i plan to keep these and possibly try to fix them.

Now some may be wondering why there are only three ballasts when they were pulled from two 4-lamp troffers, and the answer to that is the fourth ballast actually works fine, so it was moved to the stack of good ballast from this years haul.

I also plan to swap the wire on all four ballasts are these wires are falling apart where they exit the ballast.

Were these 2x4' troffers, or something narrower?

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

2x4, the two of them were pretty beaten up and had missing parts.

哪年生产的?

As far as i can tell, there are no datecodes on the ballasts, but from what the owner told me, they're likely made sometime in the late '50s or early '60s.

[Traslated: 据我所知,镇流器上没有日期代码,但据船东告诉我,它们可能是在50年代末或60年代初的某个时候制造的。]

What building did it come from? Here's a fun fact: Jefferson later became, or merged into, Magnetek. The Jefferson brand lasted into the early 80s at least.

These came from someone's house, they were being replaced, likely due to them being damaged. A lot of broken troffers were being thrown out this year from many households, i took the ballasts from a lot of them since most of the ballasts were still good (though one unfortunate trend i saw this year were many people taking good ballasts to be scraped for money).

Maybe failed bc of improper grounding of the fixture? The ballasts tried to keep them lit but bc of improper grounding it didn't want to work properly so they just overheated and failed? bc as far as my understanding goes these ballast can not keep the tubes lit and nor they can't start them if the fixture is not grounded.. am I right?

New lighting technologies is a pity fest everywhere you look. From LEDs that last only for two months, to a never-ending global starvation of t8 fluorescent tubes.
We shall reinforce ourselves with good old full mercury t12s and HIDs made to surpass one's life, and give them all the middle finger ;

Grounding is only needed for starting; once the lamps are lit, no ground is needed.

What he means is that because the fixtures weren't grounded, the lamps never started and the ballasts somehow didn't like being open circuit.

据我所知,中国在当时应该也有这种镇流器,只可惜不到十年就全部废弃了,当年的这种镇流器现在几乎毫无库存!
