You wanna know something funny? The Sylvania lamp I was hauling home at the same time as this one... Fell out of the basket on my bike and hit the ground HARD (inside a thin sleeve) and This piece of crap is the one that arrives dead. With no visible issues I can pick up.. Just dead... It is so dead.. I cannot even nuke it on the 1000w ballast.. Nothing happens...

Can't blame ya, I hate it when that happens too. My preferred methods that never fail are microwaving it in an old microwave/convection oven combo I have or strapping fireworks to it (usually big firecrackers but this method has to wait until the 4th of july)

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

The arc tube seems shorter than what id expect for a 175w lamp ,looks more like a 125w lamp

These newer Brinks lamps are in fact actually 100w or 125w lamps, I have no idea who makes these lamps now, it was formerly Caster, but Brinks has switched manufacturers a few years ago. To make matters more confusing, the Brinks Mercury bucket lights that were sold at Walmart actually contained 150w ballasts, so if you used one of the older Caster 175's it would be underdriven, and if you used one of the newer lamps pictured above, it would be overdriven.

Btw, I installed one of these lamps in a proper 175w metal halide wall pack recently and it lasted just shy of two months running dusk till dawn (thats like 550 hours), after removing it not only was the arctube already blackened, but one of the main electrodes broke off and was loose inside the arctube...quality

This burner has a typical average size for a power of 175 W.
Just take a 125 W burner and you will realize that you were wrong.
In addition, the size of the burners from different manufacturers may vary. They can be wide and short or long and narrow. It depends on the individual production developments.

For many chinese-made lamps, electrodes today are a weak spot. Atomizing occurs very quickly.

When I brought it home it was dead. I'm not sure what killed it in the first place.
