Remember that back in 1941 your standard 40w fluorescent didn't out out as much lumens as more modern lamps so more were needed. This was still more efficient than your typical 300-500w incandescent typical of that period. Since you mentioned that 2x40w strips were used in 1941 Israel. I'd like to see you upload a pic of one...

that's right, the fluorescents bulbs were 2 times less bright than today ,in the United States and in the rest of the world at this time
