The cord going up is for the light.

That should be in a back box so the connections are out of reach and are also physically supported.

The switch plate (European switches don't have separate plates) is bigger than the box.

The switch in this setup is a new Eaton switch. It is interesting because even though it is new and new ones are still being made, it is a soft snap switch but it turns off before the "off" snap.
