Our Maintenance People Are Idiots ... And I Like it !!!!

Our MORON maintenance dept relamped 2 of the 3 remaining 400w probe start MH high=bays at work today. THEY USED CLEAR MV ! It's absolutely awesome ! I now work in a place lit by almost all forms of lighting , MV , MH , HPS, T-8 fluorescent , T-12 fluorescent (inc H.O.!) CFL , and 1 incandescent exit sign . Oh yeah , and some LED Hi-bays , but they don't count.

I was amazed how relaxing it is to stand under clear MV lighting . Nothing like the color of clear mercury vapor !!!!!

Oh wow, very haphazard lighting layout lol. Was it better before they converted to the fluorescent highbays?

I wonder where they got the clear MV from, I found getting clear MV lamps in any wattage aside from 175w was harder than getting the coated version.

Back when the entire bldg was MH it was MUCH brighter . If one area needed more light another was simply added nearby. I'd be willing to guess the clear lamps came from Grainger as we seem to buy EVERYTHING from either them or Wurth . since our maintenance guys no nothing about lighting I'd say they read the old faded etch on one of the old lamps and misinterpreted MVR400 for MV400.... They're not very bright ! In the past , they used 400w MH HPS retrofit lamps in some of the now gone MH high bays and fried either the caps or the ballasts !

The lighting situation in that place looks like a nightmare! The clear mercury is cool but I wouldn't want to be under it all day. They will last a lot longer than metal halides even if they are initially dimmer. At the very least they could have used /DX lamps though.

EVERYTHING in that bldg is a nightmare ! check out the ducting on the HVAC system in the middle of the photo ! The only lighting that is actually close to right is the stuff that was actually professionally designed and installed . I personally LOVE the clear mercs, they're not as green as the camera makes them out to be , they're actually wonderful to be under !

The MV is awesome! I'm guessing when the lamp on the left in that high bay goes out, it'll be replaced by a clear MV as well?

Good quality things are awesome. Cheaply made things are not.

NICE!!!!!
I used to work in a place that had all 400w MH high bays. Seemed like they would replace the bulbs with whatever fit!! I remember the MH bulbs turning pink and almost looking like HPS when they neared EOL. Sometimes they would pop and shower glass on someones table!!

My very first word was LIGHT!

...And that is why they are supposed to be used in enclosed fixtures.

These High-bays were installed when the building was built back in 1992 , long before the days of protected MH . Arc-tube rupture isn't as common as people think. In 25 yrs of working here I've only seen 1 lamp that failed like that. My 1984 GE lamp catalog says "Metal halide lamps do have an EOL characteristic such that sometimes they fail in a non-passive manner. This primarily occurs when the lamps are oriented in an off-vertical burning position of more than 15° for the 325-,400-,950-,and 1000-watt lamps in any burning position for the 175-,250-,and 1500-watt lamps" Not all the lamps in the MH section of the catalog had the "Enclosed Fixtures Only" warning , only the ones GE deemed to have "non-passive" EOL's

I believe I read somewhere that 400w probe start base up only MH lamps were permitted to be burned in open fixtures as the chance of a lamp exploding during vertical burn was pretty slim.

Correct ! The only lamps listed as "enclosed fixture only" are certain non H.O. and anything to be operated other than VBU or VBD.

Nice! Yeah I can only recall a handful of times I've seen a ruptured vertical burned MH lamps, even with pulse start. But a horizontal burn MH lamp definitely runs the risk of rupture, and you can just about guarantee it with any PSMH lamp.

Aside from lighting MV lamps at home I don't think I've been in a place with indoor clear MV before. Seen countless installations with DX lamps but none that use clear lamps.

Wide-lite 1000, your comments are the better part of my day I only thought stuff like this happens here in South FL! Even though I'm an electrician I really don't know how you can run an MV lamp on an MH ballast! But that aside, who orders MV lamps these days?! Especially clear ones! Well enjoy it while it lasts! MERCURY VAPOR FOREVER!

Thanks ! Most probe start MH ballasts are rated for both MH and MV . I think our "maintenance" guys just guess their way through it ! And NO, it's not just in South Fl, , IDIOTS ARE EVERYWHERE !!! . They probably ordered the whole case so there SHOULD be 3 or 4 more stashed away somewhere .

I LOVE CLEAR MERCURY VAPOR !!!!

T12s and MH and MV illegal to service? That's nowhere that I'm aware of. New fixtures are no longer made but the lamps and ballasts are, though magnetic T12 ballasts are for the most part no longer made. MV ballasts are no longer made but you can use 70 or 100w PSMH ballast with ignitor removed for 100W MV and probe start MH for 175, 250, 400, and 1000.

Yeah they only national bans for older lighting technology all seem to be focused on the manufacture and import of it and not the use or sales. Nothing against buying lamps for replacement or installing NOS luminaires. Now there might be local and state regulations though.

TBH the T12 and MV ballast bans seemed kind of pointless to me as the demand for T12 and MV was already shrinking by then. MV never got banned here in Canada but I don't really see any new MV lights being installed. They were still selling 175w yard lights in stores until around a year ago.

YES , this is the same MORONS who said they can't service any of the above mentioned light sources and then installed MV lamps ! These guys are SO ignorant that I don't think they know the difference between MH and MV or even realize that what they said was illegal is what they installed !!!

This is the EXACT reason why I fix what I can , wherever I can , myself without involving them. ( sneakily of course , as I'm not actually allowed to repair ANYTHING !)

You technically can use CFLs in HPS fixtures. The ignitor won't kick on unless there is an open circuit detected.
