1000w Mercury Vapor Floods

1000w Mercury Vapor Floods

Click to view full size image

These light the camping area and part of the parking lot at Anderson Speedway in Anderson Indiana. there are 5 of these, the lamps appear to all be /DX except 1 which looks to be /C
I'd guess these are rental lights as The city of Anderson is FULL of them ! There is at least 100 in total at gas stations, convenience stores, fast food places ,ETC. all are MV and appear to be well taken care of.
ANYONE KNOW WHO MAKES THESE ?

GE PF1000. These are the biggest version of the PowrFlood series from GE.

Yep PF1000 Powerflood (no trademark spelling). Not as nice looking as the original powerflood but still a nice looking flood light imo.

Never would have guessed that ! I never got close enough to look for a logo or anything , this pic was taken from about 50-75 feet away !

I just can't believe there are some many of them in that town, there is literally at least 1 in just about every business and parking lot in town !

That's nuts! At least they're mercury vapor though. 1000w hps floods are just ridiculous lol. I wonder if that remote PC controls both lights? PCs are only rated for 1000w.

When I was in Oklahoma it seemed like every town had a gray 1kw metal halide version of this in every parking lot too.

In RI I've only seen maybe two or three of these. By the time this model came out in the mid 80s, mercury vapor was in its final days here, starting with the 1000w lights. Theres lots of older "TV set" 1000w powerfloods here though from the 60s and 70s.

When were these discontinued exactly? The ones I saw didn't look that old.

I think this was discontinued when they discontinued all their hid fixtures (except the cobraheads of course) back a few years ago.

I would really love to have the ballasts & hardware out of these floodlights. That X1 mercury stuff is getting increasingly difficult to find especially the high quality industrial streetlighting grade hardware.

Agreed! Some of the later MV GE fixtures actually used MH ballasts despite the fixtures being labeled as MV. I've seen some manufactured as MH but including a MV NEMA tag in the fixture to apply over the factory installed MH one.

In the Conroe area there AEL UltraFloods 1000w metal hailde floods on the power poles with Lumark floods as well.

Plus IIRC, the Powerfloods vary in sizes, the PF154 is the small flood light. The PF400 is the medium size flood light, and the PF1000 (which is this one) is the large size flood light. Made by GE.

I worked for a wholesaler years ago where we sold these in MH and HPS...these are quite heavy...glad that I was only selling and not installing.

Your mission - should you choose to except it - is to save unique and rare HID lighting before it's all scrapped.

Yeah the utility company here just replaces the whole arm when a 1000w flood comes down, as its easier to remove two lags and loosen the thru bolt than to remove it off the arm.

GE101R had posted a few months ago, on that. The Powerfloods were discontinued as of January 1, 2016. These days GE only makes the cobras, 201SA area light, and the Town and Country and Americana post tops in HID. Everything else is now new LED models or only the LED versions of them are made.

As are typical, GE is the first to introduce and the first to get out of something either. Considering other manufactures still make HID floods and bracket fixtures as well as multiple post tops, which GE does not.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Speaking of GE101R, what happened to him? Noticed he deleted his account.

And yes, GE has historically been a forward thinking company. I wish they still at least made the Powerfloods though. Do they make the powr/bracket still? Thought they did...

No, they stopped making the PowrBracket. The HID fixtures that they're making are the GE M400, M250R2, and the 201SA NEMA head.

Yeah they still make the PowrDoor fixtures too. But metal hailde options are discontinued though, on the M250A2, M250R2, M400A, and 201SA.

I was wondering that, I noticed he hadn't been around too but I didn't know he deleted his account.

And yeah the Powr/Bracket was discontinued, I think in 2015 or 16. American Electric Lighting still makes the 165 and Dusk to Dawn models though. And Cooper still makes their Vanguard III version.

The GE Powerflood, M250R2, and M400 were very popular but now only the M250R2s are used here.

I wish they still made the M400A2 Powr/Doors. Those are my favorite. There are lots of those on the highways here, but few on the side streets. Most of the most recent highway HPS installations I've seen are M400 FCO. Duke used to use the M250A2, there are lots around, but I think now they exclusively use the AEL 115 and sometimes 125. Also my town has a tiny amount of 60s M400s. The M250R2s are around but not many.

They used a few of these Powerfloods too, but I think now usually see AEL floods.

If it's in use I would offer to replace it with a metal halide or LED light in exchange for the M400A2.

That reminds me. There's three 400w MV GE M-400R2s in a gas station parking lot near my school. They haven't worked in a while.
