Yep, I've never seen a ballast this big before , huge & heavy. it's probably 1/3 of the weight of the whole light!

the center coil has a divider so would it still be three or four ?? And I never expected to find a 700w ballast let alone this fixture! i bought my 1'st 700w lamp about 6 months before I got the OV-50

Ouch, our 700W ballasts are really small compared to this massive piece of copper and iron!

Is this a regulated ballast? They have a third coil for just the capacitor. They are larger and less efficient but are meant to maintain lamp current if the line voltage dips or changes.

The ballast with 3 coils is called a regulated lag.

May all the great lighting technologies have their place in history.

don93 and Silverliner: the I.D. tag is on one of the capacitor holddowns and yes, it says "regulated output" (I tried to get a picture of the tag but the camera wouldn't focus good enough for it to be readable
