Form 400's on I-95 (Connecticut Turnpike)

Form 400's on I-95 (Connecticut Turnpike)

Click to view full size image

This scene is etched into my brain, When I lived in Connecticut in the 80's 90% of these were still in operation with clear lamps. If you look closely all the wiring was overhead, NOT, underground. These have insulators at the top of the metal poles with breakaway conectors so if a pole gets taken out,the wires stay (albeit lower !) these were replaced in '85-'86 with underground wiring, taller poles and 250w HPS Westinghouse OV-15 Tudors with internal 480v ballasts
This roadway sparked my love for clear mercury vapor! Yes the new HPS was much brighter, but the MV looked better!

This area is completely unrecognizable today! Looks like the entire interchange has been reconfigured! Only things the same is the exit number and the name of the street LOL. Most freeways in RI have remained original since they were constructed in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, though some major reconstruction is happening now out of fears that waiting too much longer will force bridge closures across the state, as they are well past their prime.

According to Wikipedia, CONNDOT did a lot of major upgrades to I-95 in the mid-80s and 1990s following a bridge collapse.

I go back to Ct every now and then to see some friends from school and no, it doesn't look ANYTHING like it did when I lived there. And yes, I remember the Mianus river bridge collapse, I was in high school then. I see in your link that they changed streetlights again, they appear to be M-400 's now (again), 1st thru 3rd? generation M-400's replaced any form 400s wiped out during knock-downs. Hell, when I lived there they still even had the same fluorescent lit signs as in the picture!

The lights in the streetview are 250w hps M250R2s. There are some stretches of new AEL LED lights closer to RI on Rte 95 and lots of them on Rte 395 but most of 95 between new haven and RI is still hps. A mix of Cooper OVF, OVX, GE M250R2, M400 (current style), AEL 115, and AEL 125. Some models in FCO and drop lens. A random mix of 200, 250, and 400w. Oh and the median mounted single headed high mast fixtures.

If you ever venture up near RI shoot me a message.

Will do ! And the mix of fixtures and wattages doesn't surprise me, whatever is cheapest at the time is what gets bought.I learned that whatever there's the most of is probably what was "original" and all the rest are replacements !
