These were an eBay find. Since these are designed for base down operation they'd be nice for either a table lamp or post light. These lamps are available in either VBU or VBD configuration only and only available in coated.

UPDATE : 1 of these is DOA so the seller issued me a refund !

Nice find! These use a DC arctube which is why they have such a restrictive burning position. They also require a special ballast too as a regular 39/35w ballast will operate the lamps on AC.

Cool concept back in the day but the newer low wattage CMH lamps really blows them away.

Ahh, I'm interested to see what you end up doing with them. I've always found these lamps interesting as they're descended from the unsucessful GE Halarc self ballasted MH from the early 80s.

Well , I misread the description as I thought they were VBUs of which I'da used them in the attached garage . I may either make them into table lamps or possibly use them in my 2 Holophane Postop lights.

You can use them in the upside down GE low bay lights.

Thanks ! Assuming my camera cooperates I'll get some lit photos . as for the Lo Bay idea, these would be awfully tiny in a fixture designed for a 400w lamp .

Hmm if you manage to find a bunch of the /VBU version and more ballasts, you can probably have a bunch of them in recessed cans.

Heh, if you get them lit up and are also willing to light up the Maxi Light, you should post a comparison picture between the two.

I would love one of these, especially the base down version, because my test boards are built that way.

I didn't realize they were still making these in 2003, I thought they died off with the original self-ballasted Halarc lamp.

Please excuse me if I'm getting out of line here but Tim I think that ExLax has something personal against you. Every neighborhood has the same driver so they see your name and address on the shipping label. So they say "It's that crazy guy(in his socks) with his 400 pound streetlights again". So the driver backs up to your property and suddenly your package is delivered via "airmail". To bad none of us can hire Doug Heffernan at IPS.

I've had no issues (Yet) with UPS other than them being slow as hell, USPS is great as long as the seller knows how to properly pack items (unlike my dad could couldn't pack properly if his life depended on it!) I have actually received several items from FedEx that actually survived the trip ! If you look at the percentages , UPS - 0% broken items, USPS less than 2-3% , FedUp , closer to 50% !

One other tidbit , probably close to 80% of what I've bought from eBay was delivered by USPS with UPS 2nd AND FedUp last !

Yeah pretty much everything I order from eBay is shipped by the USPS. What I don't understand is why it seems like nobody uses UPS anymore?
Pretty much EVERYTHING I buy(and I'm not just talking about eBay) is ordered online and rarely is it shipped by UPS.

UPS and FedUp are usually SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than USPS. I shipped a lamp to another member last year and got quotes from USPS and FedEx. FedEx was almost 3-4 times what USPS wanted !

Well normally you get what you pay for but in my opinion when it comes to shipping I think it's best to stick with the USPS, even though UPS isn't to bad even though they charge somewhat more money. I wish online companies, especially eBay would give more shipping options as I'm often willing to pay for faster shipping.

Yeah , I like the good ol' fashioned post office myself. Some eBay sellers do have expedited shipping but the cost is usually absolutely REDICULOUS ! I remember one seller in particular that offered that service. I could have had the lamp I bought the next day.... FOR $150 EXTRA !!! AH , NO !

Back when I used to buy a lot more lighting stuff from US based eBay sellers, USPS was my carrier of choice. They were reasonably fast and cheap and mostly importantly they didn't ding you an arm and a leg for customs when your package arrives at the door like FedEx and UPS will.

The cheapest option shipping wise would probably to rent a PO box in Buffalo and drive over every few months to grab my packages but the border is closed.
