FRIED POLE!!!

FRIED POLE!!!

Click to view full size image

I was on the phone with my grandparents when I heard a buzzing sound, I looked at the microwave and the clock was off. The floor was vibrating so I thought something was wrong with the circuit breaker. I look outside and I see this pole was on fire! Smoke roaring up. My neighbors came out, i swore a few times. I called 911 and told them the issue, a few minutes later I heard sirens coming to the scene. Eversource later arrived. I was able to snag a insulator!!!

I wonder if the floor vibrating caused by current flowing into the ground?

The buzzing was from the huge amount of fault current flowing through the lines. The current also causes them to vibrate and sway back and forth. They likely swung to close to each other and caused a massive arc.

Makes sense, a tree fell on them.

Was it really windy or was there any lightning when this happened?

Glad to know you're alright! Did you ever find out exactly what happened?

Wow! That must have been really startling! I wonder if the noise and current flowing through the ground created those strong vibrations. Did you have a power surge? If so hopefully the electronics are ok.

I like all kinds of lighting and electrical, except for LED, which I classify as a disease.

That arc must have been huge!

Ok, that’s good. The last power outage we had here was in November last year, as a scheduled shutoff to reduce fire danger.

I heard CA isn’t doing so good with fires lately.

Yeah, Northern CA is doing pretty bad right now, but I’m in the Ventura area of southern CA, which is actually supposed to have lower fire danger this year.

I've seen this happen where a tree is rotten at the base and just needs a "little push" to fall. If you looked at the tree, you'd think that it was healthy.

 :poof: Testing Positive For Westinghouse Lifeguard Disease! :poof:

They actually cut these trees not too long ago, maybe that’s why he didn’t cut it.

Always call the utility company first. The fire department cannot do anything about it because they are not authorized, and they have no ability. The power company can cut the power from their switchboard or from a dead mans switch down the line.

When a fuse blew on the utility pole behind my house they were there to replace it within an hour (it was -10F out). Their automated systems monitor the lines for faults.

I collect exit signs, preferably vintage ones.

I also have a little bit of a thing for light bulbs, too. Of course, hoarding them due to the incandescent bulb ban.
