My Personal Neon Sign! With story.

My Personal Neon Sign! With story.

This is my own, "special" neon sign! As you can see, it's my name! There's a nice story behind this one:

-I was given this sign by my grandpa at roughly age 7 or 8 back in '06 or '07. Me and my grandpa used to solder together as "tradition." Sadly, he is no longer with us (he passed in 2017 age 83), but this is always a great, sentimental reminder of him! :) If you were wondering what that mound of black electrical tape on the cord is, that is the answer. He used to buy new things [in this case a custom one, such as this], cut and splice the cords, and I would solder it back together. No joke. Buried under that tape job are the soldered cord wires.

This is a custom-built neon sign that was purchased from a shop local to him in Oakland, CA. As you can see in my video, it has an interesting "personality" - it buzzes and flickers nicely!

Hi, this is a great item with a great story attached.

I'm envious on two fronts; I never had time with any grandfather so I can appreciate your affection for this nice item, plus I love the base and how the tubing is mounted.

Is it possible to show the inside of the base? Is it also made of glass? Or is it dipped in the same material as for the blacked part of the neon tubing? Thanks.

Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, the base is sealed shut [it's affixed with caulking], and there's no way I'd go trying to pull that off.

The base is actually white ceramic on its underside and is painted black.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - let old lighting LIVE!
