Is it mercury vapor?

Any machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Yes

Why can't we just use led retrofit instead of replacing the whole fixture.

Got it from an antique place we went to today, same place I got the gumball.

The difficult part is fitting a standard size 400W MV into this luminaire. There are reduced jacket (cram-lamp) 400W MV's from China...don't know how good they are.

Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to save unique and rare HID lighting before it's all scrapped.

Your grammar has improved 100% in three days. Your home schooling has really paid off, quickly! And such knowledge of the abbreviations and shortcuts in street lighting, especially knowing about the astrodome photo controller on the Powr Bracket.
I am absolutely amazed and all of those abandoned classic street lights in your yard and close by. It's almost a fairy tale story! I wish I was 11 and knew all what you know about street lights and their construction, even the ones that I never had.

Lucky young man!

They're also available in ED28.

I found a DX version...I don't think that they are available in clear.

I'd suggest keeping your eye on eBay...something may pop up when you least expect it.

Interesting, I believe a 175w MV ED17 cram lamp was made at one point too. Useful for running MV in those medium base 175w MH fixtures. The ED28 sized 400w lamps are interesting too, my only 400w fixture is a B2255 though which can fit up to BT56 lamps in so I don't think I need one though.
