Fifty watt HPS lamps were never common in the mogul base format in my part of the country. Finding them from Westinghouse was like hot sauce on tacos.

50w HPS didnt appear in RI until the very late 80s. Before that they used 70w hps. One utility here used 70w hps right until they were bought out by the large utility that used 50w. It's funny how 50w was only common in some parts of the country.

Here it was 100W that was the standard for residential applications. The only place I ever saw 70W luminaires used was to retrofit 300W incandescent post tops in the old part of town.

Hmm so I'm guessing 100w mv wasn't very common there either? 1000 and 2500 lumen incandescent lights lit the neighborhoods here, replaced with 100w mv and sometimes 175w mv, then replaced by 50 and 100w hps. Now with LEDs were going back to the lumens if the incandescent era lmao.

You are correct...175W MV was the lowest wattage specified by all of the utilities in Washington State for residential streets.

I do wonder if 100w mercury vapor streetlights were ever used outside of the northeast, though. I have done lots of streetview exploring and there have been a few times I have seen an older streetlight with a missing refractor and what appeared to be a coated ED23.5 lamp inside. All of these sightings were in really small towns in the rural midwest where mercury vapor streetlighting still seems to be somewhat common.

I did see an HPS NEMA around here with a 5 tag so I know there's at least one 50W here. NEMA heads here typically don't have tags but most cobras do and 100W is the lowest I have seen on them. Don't think I've ever seen a 70W either. As far as MV, I would guess most around here are the 175W, possibly some of the cobras are more than that. When GEC used to use the GE Powr/Brackets for rentals they were all 400W with UFO refractor. I think that was quite high to have in somebody's yard in a neighborhood. They also used 250W for the HPS AEL 165s. Most of their HPS NEMAs I'm guessing are/were 100 or 150W, but GEC never used NEMA tags on any of their lights AFAIK, so I can't say for sure.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

When I lived in Connecticut in the early '80s 70w HPS was everywhere. Some towns however, had lots of 50w HPS IIRC I think Darien was one of them.
