Weird mercury vapor wall fixture

Weird mercury vapor wall fixture

I found this fixture on the back of the student union building of the community college in what appeared to be the recieving dock for the book store. I was on my break and had my camera, I saw this fixture and I had to get a shot. It was risky given that regular students are probably not allowed in that area, but that was a rare fixture that I have never seen before and I had to know more about it. No idea who makes it, I don't even know what these things are called. I just know that it is a wall mounted mercury vapor fixture that has a coated lamp in it. At first I thought it was a DX with worn phosphors but it looks like it could also be a C. I think this fixture is on 24/7 though I have no idea as I got this picture the first time I saw it. All I know is that it was on long before the timer turned on all the other post top lights and other outdoor fixtures so it must be controlled by a switch cause I doubt anyone would wire an HID light to be on all the time, unless it has a photo cell, which could also be the case here, but if so, why is it installed under an awning where it is always in the shade? Any info on this fixture would be appreciated.

My high school had these in a few places, like right outside the band room. There was a switch for it right inside the back door, but it never worked while I went to school there. Years after I graduated I saw the fixture finally repaired and it had an incandescent in it...nonetheless it may have been a merc (which I always suspected) but lamped with an incandescent. Now they have all been replaced with HPS wall packs.

I'm lampin...

This cobrapack must be controlled by a switch because the last time I went by there it was off.

I have seen these "cobrapacks" as well in some places and always wondered who made them, they are kinda cool.

Nothing like the beautiful cool white light of a coated Mercury Vapor lamp and the soothing hum of it's magnetic ballast.

Wow! I've never seen one of these before!! What a neat, small compact MV fixture. It does look like a cobrahead but compact. The only fixture I've seen is the Westinghouse Wall Guard MV fixtures back in the day when they were on school buildings, but that's the closest thing I've seen to something like this. How many watts is the bulb?

It's probably 100. I don't think any larger bulbs will fit.

I have one of these. Has a unique purple lens that color corrects a clear MV lamp. Mine has a odd GE 100w MV ballast wired for 277 volts! I'll post pics.

I like this, it has character. I saw what looks like a mini cobrahead for wall mount on eBay a while back.

Sadly this fixture is no more. The building it was on was demolished and I was not informed ahead of time that it was going down, otherwise I would have tried to save this fixture.

You had better buy it. You know this fixture is a rare survivor and the lighter would enhance it's value much more than the 69.00. IMO

Why would a lighter be used for a wallpack?

No, the picture of the wall pack is used as a picture. Not for the wallpack
