Thorn 14W T12 Tropical daylight

Thorn 14W T12 Tropical daylight

Click to view full size image

I managed to bag 4 of these very rare tubes :) they are the first British made 14W T12s I have seen, the 14W 15 inch T12 is very much a US only size, and while I have seen a few European made/European market ones by Philips and Osram, these are the first British made ones I have seen

I suspect these where made for export, because I got them via itallian ebay and the fact they are tropical daylight, which is a size we only got in 15W in the UK, see my Atlas 15W T12 picture for details on the Tropical daylight colour :)

I cant imagine they where particularly high volume lamps either, they came in plain sleeves, where even Thorn 15W T12s I have had came in branded sleeves (and I have never seen 14W T12 listed in any Thorn/BLI catalog I have read)

they are shown here happily running as a pair off 1 30W choke, I gave all 4 of mine nice long 2 hour runs

I still need to date them, but they have very similar construction to a case of Thorn deluxe warm white 15W T12s I had many years ago which now resides with another collector

Wait.. the famous f14t12 tube I always thought was made only in USA. The Thorn company was a UK company, am I right? Did Thorn ever exported tubes to Europe, like Baltic states and beyond like Ukraine or Spain or France?? If yes, does that mean In Lithuania there were people that used Tiny F14t12 tubes? and the shear fact, that these may existed in Lithuania gives me the goose bumps

New lighting technologies is a pity fest everywhere you look. From LEDs that last only for two months, to a never-ending global starvation of t8 fluorescent tubes.
We shall reinforce ourselves with good old full mercury t12s and HIDs made to surpass one's life, and give them all the middle finger ;

indeed the the F14T12 is a US size, and indeed the Thorn company was a UK company

indeed Thorn exported lamps around the globe, these particular tubes actually came from italy

I dont think thorn would of exported to the Ukraine sadly given the the whole iron curtain thing back in the day

however there may be a small number of 14W T12s in your country, imported via arcade machines and any other sort of machinery imported from the US

My other hobby is buses, especially the Routemaster
