LED lamp in a field

LED lamp in a field

Always impresses me how easy it is to light an LED lamp up in a field around a Tesla Coil just as if it was a discharge lamp, yet these LEDs must be passing around 10mA to look like this. If you look closely at the top of the lead-frame you can spot the corona in the fill gas.

Since the streamers inside the lamp are of very high voltage, how the LED filaments lights without damaging them? LEDs are low voltage devices.

I"m don't speak English well, and rely on online translating to write in this site.
Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.

I only working with the European date format (dd.mm.yyyy).

I lives in Israel, which is a 230-240V, 50hz country.

Very nice. I did the same with a plasma ball:

It doesn't seem to harm the led filaments...

The voltage across the diode will be low as it will have a low forward resistance while the gas will not. Why it doesn't breakdown in reverse bias I am not so sure. It may be the junction capacitance offers an equally low impedance.
