My loud, hot, tar-crumbling Universal 546-B-TC-P 14/15/20 rapid start ballast (seen here in better days) decided to spontaneously re-identify as a preheat ballast while I was wiring it in a temporary setup today - the blue wire just fell right out. So I guess it's a preheat ballast now. Granted, a loud, hot, horribly inefficient, and underdriving preheat ballast, but that just adds to the hilarity of how terrible this ballast is, lol. I covered the wire entrances with JB Weld, so hopefully it won't drop any more wires.

I took the opportunity to test lamp current with several different lamps:

F25T12 - 0.255A (55%)
F20T12 - 0.265A (70%)
F18T8 - 0.270A (70%)
F17T8 - 0.255A (102%)
F15T12 - 0.280A (86%)
F15T8 - 0.265A (87%)
F14T12 - 0.280A (74%)
F13T8 - 0.280A (78%)

20W Circline - 0.275A (64%)
22W Circline - 0.265A (70%)

F32T8 - 0.16A (64%)

So this actually drives lamps better than my Robertson S215 preheat ballasts, which I didn't expect (although to be fair, I had forgotten how weak those ballasts are). It also actually makes a respectable F32T8 ballast.

This is what I personally consider as an advantage on our European ballasts. There are always terminals to connect the wires, so you don't have to move them all the time until they break off. Once a terminal becomes brittle because of the use, simply mount another one and the wires of the ballast are protected again.

But good thing that you continue to use this one, even if it's a terrible ballast and one wire break off!

我们中国以前是依据苏联的引线式,现在改成了欧洲的接线端子式,只能说各有缺点吧,苏联和美国的引线式的方便接线,欧洲的接线端子式的还要拧螺丝接线,而且快速接线型的接线端子还只能用硬铜线,软铜线不能接线!

I've found that with a 1.5uF capacitor in series with the lamp, this makes a perfect and efficient F13T5 ballast.

Don't be fooLED, T8 IS the worst thing to do to a magnetic T12 fixture.

Also: The power factor don't affects lamp operation. I've a PL-S 9W on series choke without a PFC capacitor (LPF), that operates at full output.

Trigger start ballasts like this one actually step up the voltage to around 200 volts.

Don't be fooLED, T8 IS the worst thing to do to a magnetic T12 fixture.
