Signal Tree CGE mount

Interesting old mount for this CGE signal. CGE's have become very rare in Toronto now. I don't think the backplate of this signal is original either.

To be honest I don't know, perhaps it's to make them more visible as some of them are suspended above the roadway.?

Nice catch, this is an older 1960s and prior CGE model too. The 8" sections have the GE logo centred vertically and the two deeper grooves.

The gumballs are actually fairly recent, they're from the mid 90s and burn PSMH/CMH lamps. The model is the now discontinued Cooper URB. They replaced the old 1940s-1950s multiple incandescent gumballs.

The main reason for the the yellow backplates and signal heads are for visibility as most of the signals here are suspended over the roadway. Some newer ones even have reflective borders around the backplate also to aid in visibility. Darker colours like black and green are also used in some areas, sometimes with a yellow backplate to aid visibility.
