It's hard to understand how they were utilized and maintained 26 years.. For evening ignition, -30 F is not unheard of at about 5pm in winter, so I'm guessing they were kept illuminated 24hrs in winter.

These fixtures were in use for close to 40 years. (Installed around 1956, phased out around 1993-1994). I did hear of these massive things having ballast warmers, but how that would work, I don't know.

Streetlights are most often overlooked by society as we go about in life. I have had an interest and fascination for them since I was very little. I love drawing detailed city-scapes and the streetlights are my signature. They always play an important role in my drawings. Like Bob Ross' clouds.
